“Totem”

A natural object or animal that is believed by a particular society to have spiritual significance and that is adopted by it as an emblem.

— from Ojibwa nindoodem ‘my totem’ (late 18th century)

As human beings, we often identify humans through as little as a head and an eye. An ambiguous shape allows us to project or impose our search for the familiar features onto otherwise amorphic vessels.
